Sandra Maizels (left) handed over the District Chairman's role to Emmeline Lambert
for the year 2007-08. The function was held on Wed 27 June.

Message from the District Chairman, Emmeline Lambert [July 2007]: In 1986 I was persuaded by the Ladies of the Inner Wheel Club of Hatfield (now sadly disbanded) to join their Club under the rule that offered membership to a ‘single or widowed daughter’ of a widower Rotarian. Never, in my wildest dreams, would I have believed that 21 years later I would be taking the office of District Chairman. When Hatfield Club closed I was invited, by one of our Past District Chairmen, to continue my membership and join the Watford North Club – and the rest, they say, is history.

My father (the late Eric Reynolds of Hatfield Rotary Club) had been District Governor of  Rotary District 109 in 1978/79.  My mother (Frankie Reynolds) never lived long enough to get the chance to go on our District Executive. So for me it is a great honour to be moving into the ‘hot seat’ and completing my family’s circle of Friendship and Service.

I have already had the privilege of getting to know many of the members through my years as District Secretary and also giving talks on my teenage ‘Magical Years’ and my recent cycle ride from Land’s End to John O’Groats. In the year ahead I am very much looking forward to meeting everyone and getting involved in the activities and fun so special to Inner Wheel.

I extend my best wishes and thanks to everyone who is taking on a Club or District Office – whether for the first or umpteenth time, or as a shared responsibility.  May we all travel safely together and keep the ‘Wheel’ turning with Friendship at the hub as we journey into the future. [July 2007]

Sandra Maizels outlined to the delegates the changing role of Inner Wheel members over the years since
its early beginnings. She also announced that members' efforts provided 18* Shelterboxes and 55 Aquaboxes -
towards this year's District and Overseas project to support Disaster Response. [Note*: The number,
after the Conference, has risen to 20 Shelterboxes at the end of June 07]

Overseas Service Chairman Jeannette Lee was presented with Rotary's International Service Award
by Roy Lester, Chairman of Dist 1260 International Services.

The presentation took place at Inner Wheel Overseas Lunch on 10 May 2007 at the Holiday Inn, Markyate.

Update on the District Project on Disaster Response ... so far, over 30 Aquaboxes have been filled and funds for ten shelter boxes have been raised.

As an example of the way funds have been raised - the Inner Wheel Club of Harpenden Village decided to hold a soup kitchen in the local Church Hall in aid of Shelterbox.

This event attracted wonderful support from the local community. Enough money has been raised to pay for two shelter boxes. Click here for the full story and pictures of the event which was attended by the District Chairman Sandra Maizels and District Overseas Chairman Jeannette Lee [Mar 2007]

Profits from the show will go to McMillan Cancer Care & Willen Hospice. Click here for details.[Feb 2007]

Members of Inner Wheel throughout District 26 marked the United Nations International Day of Peace (September 21st) in a number of ways. They sent letters to their MPs, or to Tony Blair, calling for an end to conflict and a more proactive approach to Peace.  Poems of peace were read at church services, District Rallies, coffee mornings etc.  Clubs such as Amwell and Wolverton planted Peace roses. Ware club organised a painting competition in primary schools to depict 'aspects of war and peace' .

Click here for a report by Brenda Lowe covering some further details, pictures from Amwell (rose planting and grand breakfast morning) and Peace poems. Immediate Past Chairman of District 26, Brenda Lowe, was responsible for getting the UN International Day of Peace accepted into the national Inner Wheel yearly calendar. [Jan 2007]

The Inner Wheel District 26 Rally was held on Thu 12 Oct 06. About 160 people attended with the Association President Phyl Fennelly as the Guest of Honour. A Celebration of Friendship with a miscellany of music and words was held at St John's Church, Markyate. It was followed by the Rally at the Holiday Inn.
