Two Special days:

Peace day  ... 21 September, every year
and
Inner Wheel day ... 10 January, every year

Peace Day [21 Sep]

In September 2001 a United Nations General Assembly Resolution was unanimously adopted by UN member states formally establishing an annual day of global ceasefire and non violence fixed in the global calendar on 21st September to be known as the United Nations International Day of Peace.  A British filmmaker, Jeremy Gilley, helped to bring this about.

The Association of Inner Wheel Clubs in GB & I agreed at their 2006 conference in Belfast to observe this day.  For ideas of what clubs and individuals could do on this day, do visit the website: www.peaceoneday.org

On a  personal level you could simply apologise to a friend that you’ve upset; on a community level you could plant a peace rose in a public garden.

You could write letters to Members of Parliament or foreign governments calling for an end to conflicts and request that they actively seek peace.
(See www.internationaldayofpeace.org/letter-primeminister.htm
). You could hold a vigil for the victims of war, plan a peace concert, create a work of art or simply talk about Peace and the UN International Day of Peace.

The world needs to think of Peace at a time when intolerance seems to be growing rather than receding.  Life for so many people is made unbearable by the power games of those holding the weapons so PLEASE, PLEASE do your bit for PEACE on September 21st.  Let us know what your club did wherever you are and we will post it on this website. Contact brendalowe@talktalk.net with your contributions.

Inner Wheel Day [10 Jan]

Inner Wheel Day is celebrated all over the world on January 10th as the anniversary of the day when Inner Wheel was first founded in 1924. It is celebrated in many diverse ways, each of them reflecting the aims of Inner Wheel; friendship, service, and international understanding.

Some clubs knit, sew and sort stamps while having a simple meal and a natter. Others havea social activity reflecting the friendship of members; may be a meal at a special venue with friends, a theatre visit or ten pin bowling. The more active members may help at a hospital or day centre or provide a tea party for needy children. Last year a special message was sent to all members on Classic FM, and another club held a Seven Continents Lunch. Many clubs will light a Friendship Candle or contact other clubs abroad to wish them well – after all, we are the original world wide web!
